Freedom Mixed Media Layout by Sherry Bienert

1
Hey all my crafty friends, Sherry here with a splatter filled layout that I had a lot of fun making! Sometimes we forget that some of our products and tools have more then one use. All we have to do is think outside of the box, and BOOM our 'stuff' is more useful then before!

Today I decided to pull out a few fav spray colors, but didn't want to use them in the conventional way and just spray. I also wanted to use embellishments that were already on my table to create this layout! This is my favorite way to "clean.  I HATE to put things away, so instead I use them on upcoming projects!

I hope you follow along. I challenge you to pull out a few sprays and grab whatever embellies you have in your reach and create with me! (Full supply list below)

Step ONE

I selected a soft neutral background, this is important so that my color sprays will stand out. Then I pulled out my variety of sprays and unscrewed all of the tops. I lightly spritzed the page with water to damped the page. HINT: If you dont pre-moisten the page the spray will instantly soak onto the fibres of the paper and not work as well for this technique.

I pre-determine where my where my focal point would be, so that I can focus on this year.  Then, I dipped the 'straw' of one of the tops into its spray bottle and tapped the liquid onto the sections of the page where I wanted color. I repeated this step with each color until I felt there was enough on the page. Then I picked up water with a dropper, and tapped the end of the dropper, to create a bit of water splatters. Allow this to dry completely.

Step TWO

Next up are the AMAZING and NEW large industrial stamp set form Indigoblu and designed by Limor Webber Designs. Once I knew where my photo would be I 'hung' lamps and chains so they would peek out and show around the edges of the photo area. I did some in black ink and some in IndigoBlu Mega Flake metallics kit. This starter kit is one of the most amazing little gems in my stash right now. If you don't have one or haven't heard of it, you NEED to check it out! You're welcome!  It makes adding foil to your projects a cinch! Look at all this great foil!

Step THREE

Since I know where the location of my photo and embellishments are going to be situated, I spread glass beads along a few of the edges and on some of the corners. Once it was dry I used my finger to press clear gesso onto the clear beads. This will create a great base for my Magicals to stick to. Allow gesso to dry.

I pulled out a couple magicals that match (or closely match) the splatter colors, and sprinkled them one at a time onto the clear beads and sprayed them with water. I kept layering these colors till they were just right!

Then with a bit of liquid glue I adhered some bundles of thread!

Step FOUR

I splattered a few tags with the same colors as the background and along with a few other embellies I had kicking around on my workspace I created a layered stack of deliciousness! I like to use pop dots when I create these layers and they will make things more dimensional and stand out.

Using the same Mega Flakes metallic kit I applied the word 'Freedom' to the bottom left corner.

Step FIVE

I found that the word I put in the corner of the layout didn't stand out well enough so I used sticker letters and repeated the same word, overlapping the slightly. Pop the layout into a frame and Ta-Da, it's ready to be displayed!

Now for a few close ups to check out the details a bit better!

Thank you so much for stopping in and I hope you enjoyed my slice of heaven.  Creating should make you feel happy, it should make you feel like you're leaving a little piece of you on the project. It doesn't matter how you create or what you create, what's important is that you create. And don't forget to shop, I promise it's ok!

I'm a Dreamer by Sherry Bienert

2
Hey all my crafty friends! Sherry here to share with you a little inspiration to start your day off right!

Sometimes I just sit and create in my head while I'm at work. I dream of all the things I will create when I get home to my space! I'm a daydreamer, and thinker of the pretty things that I want to leave in the world.

We are always so critical of ourselves and photos of ourselves, but we are just as important to remember and to document. We create around photos of our loved ones and other important things in our lives, but forget about ourselves. The photo I based this layout around is what I feel like when I am daydreaming, how I feel when I imagine beautiful things:)

Today I am sharing a different way to use your sprays! They are extremely versatile, and are more then just a spray bottle filled with color to be spritzed onto a page. Don't get me wrong, I adore a good spray any day of the week, but there is more to them then just a little spritz! So pull out your delicious colored sprays and play along!

This technique is best if applied to a neutral colored patterned paper.  I chose Prima's Cartographer Collection - 'Les Yeux'

I started by using Limor Webber Designs 'Rugged Edge' stamps along the left and right edge of the paper.  Then applied some Whipped Spackle through the Prima Donna Downey 'Turkish Grunge' stencil to create texture  and create a path for the colors of spray.  To add a bit of white space and to tie the first two layers together I applied Super Heavy Gesso through the Prima Finnabair Bubbles Stencil. I prefer Super Heavy Gesso for this as it will be completely white and thick so it holds it shape better than fluid or surface prep gesso.

**not pictured** I applied this same stenciling to the top and right edge of the photo to be featured on this layout.

Next is the FUN part! I selected 4 colored sprays to enhance the texture that we made on the paper, Lindy's Stamp Gang   Time Travel Teal, Orange Creamsicle, Pop Rock Purple and Raspberry Lemonade. Carefully unscrew all of the caps, and place them where you won't knock them over. I spritzed the side of the page I was working on with water. Work in one section at a time, so that you don't over saturate the paper.  Using the 'straw' of the nozzle for your lightest color first, drag the color into the spots between the stenciled and texture areas. I rotated between the four colors allowing each to partially dry between colors. If the applied color doesn't run enough, simply spritz with water to get the pigment moving. I made sure to tilt the paper to manipulate where the colors would run and mix.

Repeat these steps until the effect you like is achieved.

**not pictured**I applied the same colors to the edges of the feature photo around the gesso stenciling in the same style as the background.

To create a matte for my photo, I used the same spray colors and applied them to a transparency sheet. Since the transparency is a non porous surface, it takes a bit longer for the sprays to dry. Don't use a heat gun, as it will warp or melt the transparency.

I cut the first layer just bigger then the feature photo and adhered the photo centered on it. Making a bundle of black thread I adhered it to the back of this first matte. I cut the second matter to be a bit bigger then the first. Using pop dots I adhered this to the first matte/photo section.

Adhere the matted photo to the right side of the layout using more pop dots to add more depth.

And a few peeks of this little gem a little closer up...

Creating is important, documenting is important. One day we will be gone, and I like to think by creating pretty things we leave a bit of beauty. And by documenting events and people we will keep the memories going and help people after us remember!

Heart This Layout by Sherry Bienert

2

Hey my fabulous crafty friends! Sherry here with a beautiful, color filled layout using a variety of mediums and techniques. Today I will be featuring magicals, molding paste and gesso, so dig into your stash and play along!

First here is the full layout.

Lets get started,

I recently got the Lindy's Stamp Gang, Limor Webber Designs, Industrial Chic Starburst Sprays and Magicals. I fell in love from the first spray! I started using two contrasting colors (Time Travel Teal and Bonjour Butter from the Tres Chic Collection).  I started with the Bonjour Butter spraying  in the middle of the page and  dragging the spray towards the edges as I spray. Allow to dry, then repeat these steps with the Time Travel Teal.  Drying between each color, prevents the colors from totally blending.

NOTE: I left the barcode strip on because, I like to wrap it around my chipboard backing once the spray is dry.

To create more texture (Oh, I love texture!) I used a stencil and molding paste to accentuate the area where the photo will be. Allow to dry by itself, to keep any ridges and variances in the paste.  You can use a heat gun, but sometimes this can cause the paste to puff up, and lose some of the ridges and texture in your paste.

At this point I adhered the paper to a 12x12 piece of chipboard using matte gel medium. I find that using gel medium, as opposed to tape adhesive, on the entire chipboard piece helps to prevent bubbles and buckling in the paper.  I folded the barcode strip under the chipboard and adhered it onto the back, this also helps me to keep note of the paper used, for future reference.

Next up are my most used most loved stamps, my Limor Webber Designs Rugged Edge border stamps from IndigoBlu. I adore these because they are so versatile. They can be hard and distinct or soft and subtle! Keeping in mind where my photo will be placed at the end, I made impressions of the border stamps using black ink. I wanted the images to be crisp, clean and distinct.

This was my FAVORITE part of the whole process. Once I finished I almost didn't want to cover it with anything else, I almost didn't complete this project!

One of my new fav mediums was up next. Magicals have found their way into my heart and have been a staple in a lot of my recent projects. They are so versatile and can be used in so many ways, today I will sprinkle and use water to create drips and layers!

I used a variety of magical colors (Rusty Lantern, Summer Lovin Sun, T-Bird Turquoise and Shabby Turbine Teal) to create a ton of layers, color drips and blending. I started with my lightest colors and worked my way darker. I also did a lot of layers before I was happy. Starting with that lightest color I sprinkled it onto the horizontal plane along the centre of the page, then I sprayed it with water and tilted the paper to allowed it to drip both up and down the page. Allow your page to completely dry between each layer of color. I find that as you add colors, vibrancy increases.

Now the layering and embellishments go on! I created a clear banner out of a transparency sheet to place behind my photo.  I stamped it with the Rugged Edge Stamps,  and used the same stencil as in the second step to apply molding paste. I mounted my photo using foam dots onto this banner. Triple up on the foam dots for extra depth, and allowing my photo to extend to the depth of the floral cluster.

Keeping with some simple, neutral colored flowers of soft blues and yellows, I layered a few along each side of the banner. A few of the small flowers have wire stems so I curled them around a paintbrush handle and let them stick out from the edges of the arrangement.

I applied white gesso to the flowers. This gives the flowers a similar tone, and acts as a primer for the next step.  Allow the gesso to dry.  Do not heat set this, as it could scorch the fabric on the flowers, and cause it to burn or shrink.

Sprinkle the same magical colors onto the flowers and a bit onto the molding paste on the banner. Then spray with water. Allow them to bleed and blend into each other. Again wait for them to dry. I applied a second layer of magical color to increase the vibrancy of the tones.

VOILA layout complete! Here are a few close ups of this little gem!
